Turn the handle to the lowest position, and the blade is retracted far enough for a safe shave. Ideal if you're shaving for the first time with a Double Edge Razor. However, the higher you set the blade, the better the result. Practice is essential, as cuts are easily made. Keeping an alum pen handy as a hemostatic agent is recommended.
